Harder than I was expecting! Especially everything from the lip down. And again, I think my first one was the best, so I just posted that one.
I usually do my first one by just quickly eyeballing, finger measurements and drafting, and they come out nicer overall than the later more meticulously measured ones. Interesting. I could've inked it more carefully though.

This one was a lot of fun. I seemed to have the most trouble with the far corner of the mouth, and the nearest ear.

this one was really fun, and not as complicated as I thought! I messed up with the width of the eyes on this one (the second try)...


...but I got the eyes right on the 1st try.

I was really excited to do this one. It made for a great final egghead lesson. The angle of the eyes gave me the most trouble.

The angle adds some trickiness to this lesson. I took me a few tries to get a handle on it. I had the most trouble with the egg shape itself and the eyebrow.

It seems like the nose should protrude, but I guess Preston knows best!

Lesson 8 by Patrick

Seems like the hardest is over with the egg lessons. This one was pretty fun & easy

in the ink I think I made the nearer eyebrow too big, and the cheek-lines too thin. And the top of the head is too flat.

Lesson 7 by Patrick

This one was harder than it looked too, but lots of fun. His upper lip curves down rather than up in this lesson. I made the pupils and the nose too big, and his lower lip is all over the place. I tried correcting it all in the inking.

This one was pretty fun. I seemed to grasp it pretty quickly, this is my 3rd attempt. I could still work on the perspective a bit.

UPDATE: latest lesson 5 with inking.
I noticed his eyes aren't as crossed in this lesson. And I find Blair's approach to the far cheek in this one very interesting, I wonder if there's a science when it comes to "cheating" like that? What do you guys think?

I want to make a quick announcement that after 14 years of waiting, the beloved Rocko's modern life is now officially out on DVD! I hope you grew up on it, but if not don't worry because you'll probably appreciate it a lot more now, since it is about being a young adult. Extremely clever, hilariously irreverent and beautifully animated. It was overshadowed by Ren & Stimpy, but it is just as good in most respects. Nick sure knew what it was doing back then.

This is actually my 5th try for this lesson. Don't be fooled; it's not as accurate is it might look, I'm very unhappy with how the face looks in general. I'm gonna try more this weekend

lesson 3 Patrick

By the 4th one I almost had it, but messed up on the mouth and eyes

It wasn't until this lesson that I realized his face isn't painted on, it's actually meaty. It really made me watch for how our line-of-sight effects the thickness and overlapping of his features.

One thing that really kicked my butt was how curvy the tops of his cheeks are, and how they - and his nose - obscure the centerline.

Other than that, I still wanna work on developing a natural eye for the round shapes. And it's been a fun challenge trying to maintain life in his face while sticking to the structure. I want to get to the point where I'm working on these everyday.

2nd lesson Patrick

One-a these days I'll get those eyebrows and cheeks. Gotta pay more attention to perspective and sizes, and getting the egg shape accurate. I'm having a lot of fun with the angles, as tricky as it is. And it's really developing my draftsmanship.

3rd UPDATE:
I really wanted to nail this down before moving on to the different angles. I'm still working on those lower cheeks and the eyebrows, and being confident with the round shapes. I'm getting more satisfied with the life & warmth of the face

The measurements are getting closer, but I think the drawings need to be full of more life

1st UPDATE:
This is probably my 10th try. I'm havin' the darndest time with the eyebrows, and being confident with the eye shapes.
I really gotta retrain my discipline and concentration. And again, I'm really stoked to be not only going back through this book, but with fellow cartoonists!


It's been great getting back into this book after several months. I'm seeing what areas I've developed and which ones I still haven't.

For me, it all comes down to concentration. When my accuracy fails I know it's because my concentration slipped.
