Lesson 2 (Cleaner lines) by Nicolas Martinez

I've recently completed lesson 2.

I redrew the egghead with cleaner lines. I don't have Photoshop, Illustrator, or a Wacom tablet, so I just did it the old fashioned way.

Critiques are welcome.

I'm happy to see how successful this community blog has become :)

Lesson 2 by Hammerson

This one was hard to do right, and it took me several attempts to get a really good grasp of the shape and the angle. In this example, it is very important to preserve the illusion of a fully rounded egg shape. In my first attempts, I had the tendency to cut off the bottom half (back of the head), so the whole character looked more like a mask instead of the egg. Here are the best two attempts (construction, cleaned-up pencil and comparison with PB original):

I drew this one bigger(about 6 inches) and checked as I went.


The eyebrow should be in a more relaxed position, and the teeth lines are off. I also made corners for the mouth, when it should have had a thick-lined upper lip hanging over.

This looked close when I drew it, but now everything looks off, and it is. I didn't really get to make many attempts this week, this was only my second or third. But everything needs to be shifted down on the face, and some stuff has to be fixed with the eyes. Ohhh yeah, and the mouth isn't the right shape either.

Thanks to everyone for all the great posts and comments on lesson 1. We're going to be moving on to trickier territory, moving that egg head around. Remember focus all your attention on this angle. You know the drill, practice it all week then post your best one for critique. I'l be posting new lessons every Sunday evening.
